Pan-ay

The Church of Sta. Monica in the town of Pan-ay typifies the Spanish/Mexican Baroque design. But what makes this building interesting is what it houses. Inside hangs the largest bell in the Philippines and possibly the biggest of its kind in Asia. This massive artifact, called dakong lingganay (big bell), weights 10.4 tons and was cast in 1878 using 70 sacks of coins contributed by the townsfolk. The locals claim that when rung, the bell can be heard as far as 8 km away.

Pan-ay can be reached by tricycle (10 minutes) from Roxas City, the capital of Capiz.
