  • What the Advent Wreath Means

Historically, the candles have no more meaning than a countdown. That is, they originally stood for 4, 3, 2, and 1. However, people like for things in the church to have symbolic meanings, so the candles have gradually acquired the meanings I gave you above. If someone in your church tells you that the candles have some other meaning than Hope, Love, Joy, or Peace, they aren’t wrong, they are just different. The meanings are so new that they aren’t completely standardized.

In some locations, the third candle is pink, in others the fourth candle is pink; in still others, all four candles are purple. The purple candles are lit during Advent, when the liturgical color is purple, and the white candle is lit on Christmas Eve (that is, after sundown), when the liturgical color is white. So that explains the colors of the purple and white candles—they just match the liturgical decor. But what about the pink candle, if there is one?

The pink candle is becoming more and more popular, but it has a strange origin. Long ago, the pope had the custom of giving someone a rose on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This led the Roman Catholic clergy to wear rose-colored vestments on that Sunday. The effect was to give some relief the solemnity of Lent, so this was a very popular custom. Originally—before shopping malls—Advent was a solemn fast in preparation for Christmas, so the custom was extended to the third Sunday in Advent to liven it up a little bit, too. Somewhere in there the third candle of the Advent wreath turned pink. Meanwhile, Advent is no longer solemn and the pope no longer has the custom of giving out roses. It is kind of odd to think that a Methodist would put a pink candle in a Lutheran Advent wreath because the pope used to have the custom of giving out roses, but sometimes we’re a little more ecumenical than we realize!

Remember, if 24 December is a Sunday, it is the Fourth Sunday in Advent until sundown, at which time it becomes Christmas Eve. (Eve means evening, after all!)

Picture Perfect theme this week is ~ Everyday Thanks ~

"Pray always." (1 Thes. 5,17) What else does this simple scriptural sentence mean except that all our lives God calls us to prayer? Praying is not easy.

Every day so many other things call for attention. And the world around us puts little value on prayer; it tells us to put our minds to more important matters. It is not easy to pray today. Yet God tells us to pray.

Beginning and ending the day are privileged moments for prayer. These morning and evening prayers drawn from the psalms and the scriptures also include selections from the word of God.

To Prayer is a form of:

To all of my America Friends . . .

    Thanksgiving Pictures, Images and Photos

    Only on Thanksgiving day do we bless the turkey;
To God we are thankful for that bird.
(for normally the "turkey" is a "nerd").

May our hearts be lifted up as our bellies fill.

May our lives continue to show
Love for God, family and country still.
    Especially today, we pray,

    God Bless the USA.

"Worn Out Iron Becomes A Masterpiece"

    RUSTIC SHADES

Rust is scientifically called oxidation, which occurs when oxygen comes in long-term contact with certain metals. Over time, the oxygen combines with the metal at an atomic level, forming a new compound called an oxide and weakening the bonds of the metal itself. If the base metal is iron or steel, the resulting rust is properly called iron oxide. Rusted aluminum would be called aluminum oxide, copper forms copper oxide and so on.

The main catalyst for the rusting process is dihydrogen oxide, but we know it better as water. Iron or steel structures may appear solid, but water molecules can easily penetrate the microscopic pits and cracks in any exposed metal. The hydrogen atoms present in water can combine with other elements to form acids, which will eventually cause more metal to be exposed. If sodium is present, as is the case with saltwater, corrosion will likely occur more quickly. Meanwhile, the oxygen atoms combine with metallic atoms to form the destructive oxide compound. As the atoms combine they weaken the metal, making the structure brittle and crumbly.

Some pieces of iron or steel are thick enough to maintain their integrity even if rust forms on the surface. Others are protected by water-resistant paints or other chemical barriers such as oil. The thinner the metal, the better chance rusting will occur. Water alone does not cause steel to rust, but the acidic reaction allows oxygen to attack vulnerable exposed metal. Placing a steel wool pad in water and exposing it to air will cause almost-immediate rusting. The air around the pad will actually feel several degrees warmer. Eventually the individual iron bonds will be destroyed from the heat and the entire pad will disintegrate. Rust formation cannot be stopped easily, but metals can be treated to resist the most damaging effects.

    PADALA Blues . . .

This information is very alarming and I think it's worth sharing to save you from trouble and embarassment.

A Filipino friend shared this email. His friend who works for Homeland Security as Immigration Inspector at LAX ( Los Angeles International Airport ) called him yesterday to share the information that happened last weekend. A Fil-Am citizen who was flying to the Philippines for vacation was apprehended by an Airport Immigration agent while she was checking in her baggage and going through the X-ray machine. For some reason, she was randomly checked and was told to open all the envelopes inside her carry-on Coach bag. They found 10 envelops addressed to different people in the Philippines . When all the envelops were opened, a total of $11,000 cash was discovered. They asked the traveler if she knew the contents of the envelope. She said no, because all the envelopes are just "padala" and the senders didn't tell her whether or not there was money inside. Immigration agents showed her a Policy and guidance stating that it is illegal to import and export over $10,000 in any Asian countries to prevent the possibility of supporting terrorism.

She was fined $500, her name was "red labeled" by Immigration (means every time she enters and exits the airport, she will be searched 100%), and she also missed her scheduled flight to the Philippines for being held almost 5 hours. Hard to believe that departing passengers from the U.S. are also subject to the policy but looks like it is being strictly enforced now. The lessons learned is before you accept any "padala", make sure the envelopes are open and you physically see the contents of it or just plainly say "sorry but I can't accept any padala" for your own safety.

    Picture Perfect - Celebrate

Harvest is one of the most important parts of fish farming and is frequently overlooked. This phase is often under-equipped and poorly planned. In cages and raceways, harvest may be as simple as partial draining; then herding, confining and removing fish with a dip net. However, harvesting pond raised fish can be the most labor intensive aquacultural activity. Ponds are harvested by the drain-and-seine (total) or the multiple (partial) harvest method. Harvest should take place during cool weather

To harvesting fish is one way to celebrate this bounty of earth.

The Picture Perfect Theme is... ~Handmade~

    PhotobucketPhotobucket

    Welcome to

    P I C T U R E P E R F E C T

    ...oOo...

There is no greater symbol of the Filipino Christmas spirit than the parol.

Parol was derived from the Spanish word farol, the lantern in the shape of a five- pointed star representing the Star of Bethlehem is found hanging in homes, businesses, along the streets and in churches throughout the Philippines.

"The parol is a symbol of hope, a struggle of the light and dark,"

    ...oOo...

    The theme this week is

    'HANDMADE'

It is usually a school project (to make parols). Then it became more commercialized, and many people started making them as a small business. In the rural areas, people don't buy them, they make them, and because they're poor, they'll use whatever they have for materials.

The basic parol is made of two stars of bamboo sticks that are joined at the corners. The two stars are pulled apart and braced with small sticks to make the parol three-dimensional. Before covering the star in cellophane, many people insert lights.

And here it is how to make a PAROL:
    Photobucket
Making a parol takes about four hours. If you want to string lights inside, do so between steps 6 and 8.

    Step 1: Gather materials.

    -- 10 12-inch pieces of bamboo

    -- 20 6-inch pieces of string

    -- 5 2-inch pieces of bamboo

    -- 5 small rubber bands

    -- glue stick

-- glue gun with hot glue sticks

    -- scissors

    -- 22 5 1/2-by-5 1/2 square pieces of colored cellophane

    -- 1 bell

-- cut-out paper tassels and tinsel garland

Step 2: Tying the bamboo. Tie two pieces of bamboo together at one end, forming a V shape. Make four pairs. (When tying, cross ends of bamboo sticks, lay string under cross so ends lie at 3 and 9 o'clock; pull up ends, cross them and pull them under bamboo cross at 12 and 6 o'clock to tie securely.)

Step 3: Take two pairs and crisscross them, guiding the end of one under and over the two ends of the other and doing the opposite with the other end, going over and under instead. Tie the two pairs together at one end only. Take a single piece of bamboo and tie it to both of the other ends. Adjust pieces to make an even-shaped star.

Step 4: Repeat steps 3 and 4 to create another star frame.

Step 5: Fasten frame. Put one frame over the other and join the five points with rubber bands. Make sure joints are securely fastened.

Step 6: Form the parol. Insert the 2-inch pieces of bamboo at each of the five cross sections in the middle of the parol. Use the glue gun to secure the 10 joints. Let glue dry.

Step 7: Add the bell. Tie the bell with a piece of string from the top point of the parol. Do not allow the bell to hang loosely. A swinging bell may damage the cellophane.

Step 8: Add cellophane. Using the glue stick, begin gluing sheets of cellophane over the parol frame. Go crazy with decoration. Use doilies, stickers, glitter, tinsel garland or whatever works.

Step 9: Add fringe and tassel. Attach two decorative paper tassels of your choice to the bottom points. Glue fringe to the top and side points of the parol.
